Best beginner sizes

A reliable starter flower uses three petal sizes: 2 inches, 2.75 inches, and 3.5 inches tall. Cut six small petals, six medium petals, and eight large petals. The finished bloom lands around 5 to 6 inches wide, which is large enough to look full without becoming floppy.

Cardstock choice

Choose 65 lb to 80 lb cover cardstock for most flowers. It curls cleanly around a pencil, holds glue well, and does not require special tools. Heavier stock can look beautiful for oversized flowers, but it takes longer to shape and may split on tight curves.

Cutting order

  1. Cut all large petals first so the sheet edges stay easy to hold.
  2. Cut medium petals from the remaining long strips.
  3. Use scraps for small petals, centers, and test curls.
  4. Sort the petals by size before glue touches the table.

Assembly order

Start with the largest petals in a loose circle. Overlap each petal by about one third of its width. Add the medium ring slightly inside the first layer, then the small ring. Finish with a fringed strip, curled paper spiral, button, bead, or punched circle.

Common fixes

If the flower looks flat, curl the top edge of each petal backward and pinch the base forward. If it looks crowded, remove two medium petals. If the center feels messy, cover it with a small punched circle before adding detail.
